A refugio is a basic mountain hut — shared bunks, communal meals, often inside the parks (essential for multi-day treks like the W). A lodge is a comfortable, usually mid-to-premium property positioned near the trailheads, frequently with guides and meals included. An estancia is a working Patagonian sheep ranch that hosts guests — a uniquely local experience with horseback riding, asados, and wide-open steppe. Pick based on whether you want proximity, comfort, or culture.

It varies a lot. Properties marked as remote / off-grid may run on generators or solar, with limited hours of power and no mobile signal. Heating is common (wood stove or central) because nights are cold year-round, but always confirm. WiFi is increasingly available even in remote lodges, though it can be slow or satellite-based. Use the amenity filters to find stays with the specific facilities you need.

Inside the parks, many lodges and all-inclusive properties bundle meals because there are no restaurants nearby — this is the norm at Torres del Paine lodges and most estancias. In towns (El Chaltén, El Calafate, Puerto Natales), breakfast is usually included and you eat out for lunch and dinner. Refugios sell meal plans separately or let you cook in shared kitchens. Check the listing — a stay with a kitchen gives you the most flexibility on a budget.

Town stays (El Calafate, Puerto Natales, El Chaltén village) are almost always cheaper and have more choice, but add daily transfer time to the trails. In-park lodges and refugios cost more and book out earlier, but save you hours of travel and let you start hikes at first light. Budget travelers base themselves in town; those prioritising trail access and time pay the premium to stay close.

Peak-season bookings in Patagonia are often non-refundable or carry steep cancellation fees because demand far exceeds supply. Refugios and in-park concessions are typically the strictest — some require full prepayment with no refund. Read the policy before paying, and consider travel insurance that covers trip interruption, since weather closures and transport strikes do happen in the region.
