El Chaltén is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia. Founded in 1985 as part of Argentina's effort to assert sovereignty in the region, it is now one of the country's main trekking destinations. Trails leave directly from the village for the granite peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, including Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre. No hiking permit is required. The main season runs from late October through April, while January and February bring the longest days. Strong winds and rapid weather changes are common, so leave room to adjust your plans.
