Laguna de los Tres is El Chaltén's signature day hike and one of the main viewpoints of Fitz Roy. The trail climbs through lenga beech forest and exposed moraine before a steep final ascent to the lagoon below the massif. On clear mornings, the granite towers can reflect in the turquoise water. Start before 7 a.m. to avoid the busiest hours and catch the early light. Weather windows can be brief, so check the forecast the evening before and turn back if conditions worsen.

About the hard grade: Full-day efforts, 800 m+ of gain. Steep, rough terrain, possible scrambles. Early starts and weather windows matter.

Hike it right

Know before you go.

Patagonia rewards prepared hikers. A few specifics for this trail — so you, and the trail, both come back in good shape.

Weather-window route

In high wind or heavy rain, postpone. Check the forecast above before committing — the mountain will still be there tomorrow.

Visibility matters

The views are the point of this trail. In low cloud, save it for another day and pick a forest or lake walk instead.

Start before sunrise

First light on the peaks is what this trail is famous for. Start in the dark with a headlamp — it pays off.

Safety notes

The final ascent is steep, rocky, and exposed. Check the weather forecast and current trail conditions before setting out. Start early and plan to return in daylight. Turn back in strong winds, snow, ice, or poor visibility. Stay on the marked trail and do not depend on mobile coverage. Winter conditions can require crampons or other traction equipment.

What to pack

The Patagonia day-hike checklist — layers first, wind always.

For this trail: Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots and layered clothing, including a warm layer and a waterproof, windproof shell. Bring trekking poles, sun protection, a headlamp, enough food and water, and a basic first-aid kit. Carry suitable traction equipment when winter conditions require it.

0 of 26 packed

Patagonia can cycle through four seasons in one afternoon. Dress in layers you can add and shed fast — wind is the defining factor.

  • Base layerSynthetic or merino, never cotton — it must wick sweat and dry fast.
  • Mid layerFleece or a light insulated jacket for breaks and summit wind-chill.
  • Outer shellWind- and waterproof jacket. This is the one piece you should never skip.
  • Hiking pantsQuick-dry. Add thermal tights underneath in shoulder season.
  • Warm hat & glovesEven in January — exposed ridges are cold when the wind picks up.
  • Sun hat or capPatagonian UV is strong and shade is rare above the treeline.
  • Spare merino socksWet feet end hikes. A dry pair weighs nothing.
