How we grade

An honest difficulty scale.

Easy

Under 4 hours on marked, gentle paths.

Minimal elevation gain, no exposure. Suitable for families and first-time hikers in trail shoes.

Moderate

Half to full day with sustained climbs.

Up to ~800 m of gain, sections of loose rock or wind exposure. Requires solid base fitness.

Hard

Full-day efforts, 800 m+ of gain.

Steep, rough terrain, possible scrambles. Early starts and weather windows matter.

Very Hard

Multi-day or technical undertakings.

Navigation skills, gear, and experience required. Conditions can turn dangerous fast.

Permits, fitness, weather, and safety — answered for every level of hiker

In El Chaltén, all trails inside Los Glaciares National Park are free and require no permit — just register at the trailhead ranger station. In Torres del Paine, you need a paid park entrance and must pre-book your campsites and refugios, which effectively acts as a permit system. Some trails (like the ice trek on Perito Moreno) require a guided tour with a licensed operator.
